HE WHOLE concept of the "World Truck" is nonsense according to oger Smith, general sales and marketing manager of Sandbach nglneering Company.
(The definition of World Truck 1 this context is one design with limited range of components Dr worldwide applications).
Mr Smith suggested that what would earn a profit under one et of circumstances would be a total disaster" in another.
Mr Smith told Road Haulage kssociation members that in his )pinion, type approval has cost Iritish manufacturers and the transport industry a lot of unnecessary expense.
He said that it had been looked upon originally as a protective measure to act as a one-way valve against the imports of continental manufacturers.
However, with EEC harmonk sation, "the extra hassle has been more onerous on the UK manufacturers," said Mr Smith.
Talking about Sandbach Engineering products, Mr Smith said that his company is now aiming at a 45-working day cycle from receipt of order to delivery on any Foden chassis.
The current product mix includes eight engines, six gear boxes, four rear axles (with 24 ratios) and wheelbase variants at one inch intervals.
