EGR will meet Euro-4
GERMANTRUCK maker MAN has chosen to refine its existing exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system to meet Euro-4 emission levels, it was revealed this week.
MAN's head of engineering Dr Karl Viktor Schaller told CM that cooled EGR combined with catalyst filtration will be available from October 2004, well ahead of the pending legislation.
"Next autumn,we will introduce cooled EGR at one power level, to suit long-haul trucks," he says.
He added that other power outputs would eventually get the same treatment, but ultimately he expects that MAN will give its customers the choice of two different systems, allowing operators to choose an exhaust treatment method that matches their operational routes.
"We will also introduce selective catalytic reduction (SCR) to run alongside EGR," he says. "Each system has its own merits, and while EGR attracts a slight increase in fuel consumption and is more cost-effective than SCR, it is less suited to stop/start urban routes."
