REPORTS FROM Germany indicate that the proposed introduction of the controversial LKW-Maut motorway truck tolling system could he put back past its previous 2 November deadline. Since trials of the system started on 31 August operators have reported chaos with around 70,000 of the on-board units used to calculate bills making the wrong calculations. In other cases the units don't work at all — one firm quoted in the German trade press reports that only 10 out of its 40 units function.
This has lead to mounting pressure on the German transport minister Manfred Stolpe to resign.
