DRIVERS DELIVERING to Marks & Spencer stores throughout the country have defied their union's recommendation to accept a revised pay offer.
The decision by employees of Coventry-based Joint Retail Logistics (JRL) means that talks with management will drag on more than nine months after an increase was originally due to come into force.
Mick Cash, senior assistant general secretary of the RMT union. says it is the second year running that negotiations have been extremely drawn out.
"Members have had enough and think they can do better. We will have to go back and see what areas they are unhappy with and then seek an improvement from the company." He adds that the vote against accepting the revised deal, which would improve basic pay by between 2.5 and 3%, showed a majority of four to three.
A spokesperson for Exel, which runs JRL as a joint venture with Tibbett & Britten, says: "We are in discussion with RMT to see what the implications will be."
