Drivers had 'little idea' of regulations

ON each of 72 summonses for breaches of the Road Traffic Act, Edward Billington and Son, of Liverpool, were fined £5 at Ellesmere Port last week. They were also ordered to pay an advocate's fee of 40 guineas. Fines totalling £72 were also imposed on nine drivers.
It was stated that a traffic examiner paid a routine visit to Criddles' cattle food mill, a subsidiary of Billington and Son. He discovered that some of the drivers' hours of driving records were not being properly kept, and that in those which were kept the regulations were not being observed.
The investigation showed that most of the drivers appeared to have little idea of what was required of them under the regulations. The company had slipped up by failing to see that the person appointed to look after the drivers had the necessary knowledge. Mr. Rayner, who appeared for the company, said a new trafic manager had been appointed to carry out daily and weekly checks on drivers' records.
