• The Irish Insurance Federation says its members will reduce insurance premiums if a police crackdown on defective vehicles succeeds in reducing accidents by 20%.
Premiums are dictated by the cost of claims. Insurers say that if the number of claims falls so. too, will the cost of insurance.
Irish police are on the third week of a stop-and-check operation of all vehicle types.
This week trucks are being targeted under Operation Juggernaut.
Operation Juggernaut has been conducted in selected areas in recent months; but it has now gone national, and will continue until mid-November, say police.
Chief Supt Al McHugh, of the Garda Traffic Policy Unit, says the original operation revealed a significant incidence of noncompliance with safety standards in some sections of the haulage industry when the vehicles were examined.
Automatic fines will be levied for infringements found in the checks.
