• Drivers in London should find their way around the capital more easily from this summer following a .C23m redesign of road signs.
The Highways Agency says it will be the largest single resigning project in the country, involving the renewal and replacement of 5,000 signs.
The first 18-month phase of the project starts in east London with the whole of the capital due for completion by 2000. It is estimated that drivers getting lost in the capital currently costs £35m a year if all the extra fuel, wasted time and vehicle wear and tear is taken into account.
The British Road Federation immediately welcomed the move but called on the Highways Agency to introduce
similar schemes in other UK cities, particularly Birmingham and Manchester.
E Westminster Residents Against Gridlock—a group of local residents and senior politicians—has formed to fight the
Government's .C20m plan to pedestrianise Parliament Square, Trafalgar Square and Whitehall.
WRAG fears the move will lead to heavy congestion on other residential streets.
