• Projected fuel costs and rising congestion are persuading increasing numbers of customers to look at rail, according to TUG Nexus, which believes rail can be viable for some bulk products over distances as short as 150km.
But Nexus commercial director Robert Newton warns that rail will lose some of its benefits if weights go up from 38 to 40 tonnes. He adds that it is still difficult to project future costs with rail because one fixed price is given and component costs are not broken down, Nexus has just won a 12month deal to provide a road;rail service for sugar distributor Napier Brown from northern France to the UK.
More than 20,000 tonnes a year will he loaded in dedicated bulk food containers by TUG in France and transported to a railhead at Noisy, Paris. They will then be moved by rail through the Channel Tunnel to the Manchester Euroterminal.
Nexus vehicles will collect the containers from the rail terminal and deliver to Napier Brown's site at Trafford Park, Manchester.
