THE RHA is to be urged to call a national one-month strike of all goods vehicle operators unless the Transport Bill is suitably amended in relation to the carriage of goods for hire and reward, and drivers' hours.
This was decided at a meeting last week of the Yorkshire (Hull) Mahon and Scarborough sub-area, when it was agreed to ask for the stoppage to take effect from April 1. It was emphasized that customers should be given one month's notice of any impending strike action.
The resolution was passed after the meeting had been warned by Mr. T. W. Jackson, of Hull, that the country would grind to a halt within three months if the Bill goes through Parliament unaltered.
No other industry had been so persecuted or had had so much legislation directed against it in recent years. "I interpret all this activity as being a carefully connived diabolical plot to completely dissolve free enterprise road haulage", Mr. Jackson added.
