It The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) is calling for legislation to ban the use of mobile phones at the wheel. The move is being backed by the parents of Carol Pattison, who was killed on the M8 when a 38-tonner crashed into her car.
The driver was hanging up his phone when the accident happened, having received a call regarding his delivery status.
RoSPA fears that the increased use of text messaging and phones with Internet facili ties could lead to more deaths on the road. It warns that government efforts to educate the public on the use of mobile phones when driving simply aren't working and it will be making this clear to the new Transport Secretary, Stephen Byers.
John Howard, FloSPA's director of safety policy, says: "A law specifically targeting their use would make it crystal clear to drivers that they should switch off their mobile phones before starting the engine."
