Reg Reeves drives a Renault Premium 400, with a singleseater cab, for Irlam out of Warrington. "It's a big cab," he said as soon as he climbed in behind the wheel of the ECX.
"There seems to be as much room as in mine and it keeps the passenger seat. There's so much stowage space I don't think I would have enough gear to till it all. The engine pulls well up the hills and hangs on in the gears. It's convenient to operate the Jake brake with the brake pedal. it's a bit quieter than the Premium. The cab sits up straight through the roundabouts and it gives a good ride too. ERF has come a long way."
Graham Reid was down from Perth, driving an ERF EC11with the earlier Olympic cab for Mciaughton Transport. "The instruments are laid out much better," was his initial response. "I can see the fuel gauge now and the Road Relay display has a lot more information. I don't have a TY, microwave, air conditioning or electrically adjustable mirrors as standard in my spec. I do have a Jake brake and I prefer the control on the floor The gear lever is as light as for my TwinSplitter but with full synchromesh anyone could drive this. The brakes give more power for less effort...I'll make a swap if you will!"
Robert Hall drives a Daf 95 400 with a Space Cab for S&M in Birmingham. "It's as big as the Daf and just as easy to move about inside. I think it has more stowage space but my bunk is a bit wider. It's got traction control, axle lift and cruise control. This is quieter than the Daf but it hasn't done as many miles yet What a nice gearbox—positive and easy to use. The ride is smooth too. Where's the shower?"
