by Sally Nash Somerset-based Framptons International has told all its drivers to put seals on their trailers after three illegal immigrants got into the UK hidden in the back of one of the company's vehicles.
Framptons' transport manager Richard Fry is now warning other operators who are using the Cherbourg/Poole ferry route to be aware of the problem.
The Framptons driver was taken by surprise when, en route from Spain, he saw in his mirror that the curtains were being cut from the inside of the trailer.
Three men jumped out. The driver gave chase but failed to catch the men, who were later apprehended by the police.
Fry says that the driver was unaware that his vehicle had been tampered with because all the doors were apparently opened and closed by an accomplice. Seals will help the drivers discover if something is amiss, says Fry.
"We want to make people aware of this issue," he adds. "Drivers are probably bringing people in totally innocently."
