• UK domestic drivers' hours regulations should be abolished in favour of a maximum 48-hour working week proposed by the European Union, says the Transport & General Workers Union.
The T&G wants a maximum of eight hours driving a day within a total 10hour working day; a minimum 12 hours of rest in any 24 hours; and all hours of duty to be regulated. Truck drivers are currently exempted from maximum working week legislation.
Danny Bryan, T&G national secretary for road haulage, says: "Lorry drivers start work at any time of the day and night. They can be on duty For more than 16 hours a day—rest facilities are almost nonexistent."
The campaign, spearheaded by the International Transport Workers' Federation, brings together all European transport unions to highlight the issue of long working hours
