• The Government is encouraging the Vehicle Inspectorate to sign up to a code of practice which would commit all vehicle examiners to treat hauliers "fairly and courteously". The Enforcement Concordat sets out what hauliers and other businesses should expect when dealing with central and local government inspectors.
The enforcement bodies should be "helpful, courteous and efficient", says the code. Complaints procedures would be publicised and businesses should be given a chance to "discuss and remedy problems before action is taken— unless an immediate response is needed".
Signing up to the code is voluntary but the Government is determined that all enforcement bodies will sign. A spokesperson for the VI says it will fully endorse the spirit of the Concordat and will sign up when asked to do so.
