• About 2,500 drivers in South Yorkshire are expected to be the latest to agree on a £4 an hour wage following agreement between unions and hauliers in the region.
The agreement gives drivers of 32 and 38-tonne trucks in the Sheffield and Doncaster areas the £4 an hour breakthrough, adding 2.9% to wages, and an extra 50 pence on the overnight subsistence rate. From May next year drivers get an additional day of holiday entitlement, up to a maximum of 22.
The deal is being "strongly" recommended by both the Transport and General Workers Union and the United Road Transport Union and acceptance by members is expected.
Although the agreement was not made under an official Road Haulage Association and Joint Industrial Council, union agreement in South Yorkshire would follow similar deals struck among JICs elsewhere. For the 1993/94 wage round only Scotland and mid and north Wales are still to settle.
