• A Kent haulier is warning operators to check the conditions of their trailer contents insurance after a theft left him liable for over £30,000.
Terry McPherson of Kim International discovered last week that some consignments are considered high risk because of their potential for disposal after theft. "This was a load of shoes and jumpers from Romania," he says. "It's not as if I was carrying spirits or ciga
rettes. They don't specify shoes or jumpers as high risk in the CMR terms. Do they expect me to ring them up to check every time I am offered a load?" The trailer was stolen in the UK.
Guardian Royal Exchange, now known as Guardian, says: "Regrettably the nature of some consignments leaves them more open to theft. In this case they were outside the terms we understood and we have had to repudiate the claim."
