• Hauliers should be ready to pay voluntary charges of at least L7.50 to tyre suppliers for every worn-out truck tyre casing sent for disposal.
This warning, from the National Tyre Distribution Association, comes as it attempts to ensure the "environmental collection and disposal of the 38-million used tyres, both truck and car, generated in the UK every year".
The NTDA wants to achieve a voluntary agreement on tyre disposal, in a bid to prevent the Government from legislating on the subject.
In a recent survey of NTDA members 80% of tyre suppliers supported such a voluntary disposal charge; one option is the imposition of a point-of-sale tax to be paid by tyre buyers.
The survey also revealed that for 54% of suppliers the cost of truck casing disposal has risen due to a reduction in the number of outlets such as landfill sites which are prepared to take whole tyres.
The NTDA is to begin a series of presentations to the Road Haulage Association and the Freight Transport Association to
Proposed raise aware disposal ness of cost— these £7.50a rising tyre. costs.
