Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Swift Transport Services has won three contracts to sort and deliver components to the newly-commissioned Rover R8 production plant at Longbridge.

The contracts, worth a total of about £3 million, are with Britax Vega of Droitwich, Societa Italiana Vetro SpA of Chieti, Italy, and Rists of Newcastle-under-Lyme.

All supplies are co-ordinated at Swift's distribution centre at Rowley Regis, 20km from the production line. A computer system has been installed to control the mainly just-in-time deliveries.

The 24-hour, 20-vehicle operation uses Lawrence David curtainsider trailers.

Swift's LEP Group parent has announced pre-tax profits of £9.55 million for the six months to the end of June, up 89% from last year. Annual turnover rose 13% to £644 million.

The company plans to continue its expansion into Europe, following its acquisition of Belgian operators Jean Vincent and SA Maro-Trans. These two companies have a combined fleet of 30 vehicles, which distribute to Germany, Italy and France.
