SKILLS FOR LOGISTICS (StL) has received a funding boost in the form of a £137,000 cheque for its Schools Programme, which is designed to attract youngsters into the industry.
The cash is from the trustees of the Road Haulage Distribution Training Council. It will fund the first year of a three-year programme focusing on schoolchildren between 14 and 15. SfL chief executive Ian Hetherington (pictured, right) says: "Logistics suffers from an 'ugly duckling' image and as a result tends not to appeal to young people. Career prospects are not promoted enough and the overriding profile of the industry's workforce is middle-aged, white and male."
The programme will work with schools on a regional basis. It will concentrate on raising aware ness by developing logisticsrelated curriculum materials and highlighting the range of career opportunities within the industry by producing career guides.
Hetherington concludes: "The project will have very clear measurables so that we can gauge the result of this programme."
The cheque was presented to Hetherington at last week's RHA annual lunch.
