The protest took place outside the European Commission HQ in Brussels on Tuesday (10 October) ; it involved union members from Belgium. France, Luxembourg and the Netherlands.
It was organised by the European Transport Workers' Federation in response to the latest regulations on maximum driving time and minimum breaks.
The Federation says: "Europe lacks enough and adequate parking slots to guarantee comfort and security for drivers. As a consequence legislation can hardly be implemented. Road safety is weakened, freight crime incited and workers' health and safety threatened."
The unions are calling on the European Commission to recognise that better rest facilities are important in ensuring driver safety — and to force EU member states to provide them.
