The CS Ellis (Group) used to involve itself in contract hire deals; these days, it chooses to buy its trucks. This, in part, explains the increase in its fixed assets over recent years in the form of property, vehicles and other hardware. Their combined value rose by Elm between 2002 and 2005.
Today the firm has 23 tractors, 22 rigids, and a pool of curtainsiders. It buys Scanias "We have run them for 10 years, they are reliable, and are accepted by the drivers," says Ellis and Dafs "reliable and good on fuel economy".
Although Mackenzie can't hope to scrutinise every truck, every week, he does carry out random vehicle audits, looking at the overheads incurred and the rates attracted by particular vehicles.
