M42 overtaking ban extended to A14

THE HIGHWAYS AGENCY (HA) will follow its trial truckovertaking ban on the M42 with a similar scheme on the A14 in East Anglia.
The ban will be put in place between Junctions 0 and 1 eastbound, near Welford, and Junctions 1 and 2 westbound, near Kelmarsh in Northamptonshire.
The HA says that discussions are currently ongoing. but if the project is given the go-ahead it would start before next April and would last for 12 months.
This follows the 18-month pilot project along a three-mile stretch of the northbound M42 in Warwickshire. This was designed to reduce congestion caused by slow-moving LGVs overtaking on long uphill sections, and to cut journey times for lighter traffic.The ban covers all trucks of 7.5 tonnes and above.
The Freight Transport Association points out that to date no evidence has been offered that the M42 ban has been a success. A report into the project is not due to be published until later this month — and it is rumoured to reveal that average journey times have fallen hyjust five seconds.
