Demountable bodies on 3.5-tonners are nothing new. Ray Smith's Metro Swap, for ample, uses larger vehicles to trunk 3.5-tome bodies, which are then transferred to tall chassis for final delivery. A variation on this theme emerged this year when arose, the food retailer in the John Lewis partnership, launched its homelivery service, called Ocado. It uses interchangeable boxes (or 'pods', as ado calls them) manufactured by Paneltex.
A conventional demountable system does not suit the automatic loading stem Ikeda uses at its distribution centre, which it believes Is essential in iking notoriously expensive home deliveries a viable operation. The pods e lifted onto the chassis using fork-lift trucks and secured in place with a ni-fifth-wheel system. Safety devices are fitted to prevent the vehicle Mg driven away unless the box is locked in place.
The pods are are 2.4mm high, and this short-and-tall combination rtainly gives them a distinctive look.
