• Securicor Parcels is to link up with one of France's largest parcels operators as part of a £30m development of the company's UK and European business.
The deal will enable Securicor to offer next day and prenoon deliveries in Northern France and 48-hour deliveries to the rest of France. A joint company, owned 50:50 by Securicor and the un-named French company will operate the service.
Securicor Express European Parcels division managing director Bob Andrews says: "Securicor is determined to profit from the growth promised by the Single European Market in 1992. We intend to set up operations and partnerships in all the relevant territories so that we have a well established infrastructure in place by 1992."
Andrews' plan is to invest £30m of the proceeds from a major rights issue by the company to develop the parcels operation. Some of this money will be used to computerise the collection and sorting of parcels in the UK; some will be used in developing the company's overseas operations.
Securicor currently operates in the Netherlands, West Germany, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Ireland and the UK.
It is understood that discussions are well advanced with a company in the Netherlands for further development of the company's Dutch business.
There are also plans to expand Securicor's link with Aer Lingus, and Andrews says: "We are already looking at distribution and warehousing in the UK and European territories, where we already have the sort of infrastructure which will permit development of storage activities."
