• As expected an Algarve 35seat semi-integral midi coach based on the MAN 10.180 rear-engined chassis has been launched by Salvador Caetano (UK). It will be shown at the Blackpool and Southampton coach rallies before going on a demonstration tour to operators who have expressed interest in it. Production models should be available by the end of the year.
The Algarve has a turbocharged MAN D 0826 TOH in-line six-cylinder engine driving through a ZF S6 36 synchromesh gearbox with ZF power-steering as standard.
It has full air-suspension and, thanks to its semi-integral construction, luggage space is accessible from both sides within the wheelbase.
The 35 reclining seats are trimmed in moquette: tinted side windows, a courier seat, ducted heating and full body insulation come as standard.
Caetano bodywork is already available in the UK on Volvo and Daf chassis, as well as on the Toyota-based Optimo. The new Algarve is one of several current projects with MAN — Caetano has just completed a prototype double-decker for the German market and plans to bring it to this country.
The Portuguese company has enjoyed a 70% surge in UK business over the past year and aims to sell more than 200 vehicles here this year.
EJ As a result of this new business, group president Salvador F Gaetano opened a new UK headquarters last
week. The base, near Ibstock, Leics (0530 63333) has a showroom, workshop and office space with parking for more than 50 coaches.
Salvador Caetano (UK) managing director Mike Stannard says the move from Northampton to lbstock demonstrates a "new, longterm commitment to customers, not only as a distribution centre of new and used coaches, but also as an after-sales service centre for the supply of spare parts and accident repairs."
