DHL EXEL IS losing control of three retail distribu
tion centres employing nearly 2000, people because Tesco has decided to operate them inhouse. All drivers and warehouse staff at the depots in Coventry, Chepstow (Gwent) and Didcot (Oxfordshire) have been told their jobs are safe.
Tosco says the decision follows a review of its distribution network. "We constantly look for ways to serve our customers better and believe these changes will help us do that," says a spokesman. "No other depots are affected in this way."
Paul Clarke, spokesman for the retail union USDAW, says the changeover could benefit its members in the long-term: 'They are joining the distribution chain of a very successful company and the likelihood is that it will expand in the future. "That would give job security for people coming over from these sites," he points out.
