Here's the fourth instalment in our series of weekly bulletins to help you prepare for the new technology, courtesy of the FTA.
You must be able to copy data from the digital tachograph venicle unit (VU) and driver cards to demonstrate compliance with drivers hours rules and meet your 0-licence obligations.
The VU stores 365 days' average' activity and the driver card 28 days, after which their memories are full and the oldest data will be overwritten and lost. The DfT will consult on the frequency of downloading later this year, but in the meantime we recommend you download at least every three months (VU) and 21 days (driver cards), and before a vehicle or driver leaves your control.
Make sure any VU download equipment you buy is compatible with the VUs you need to access. Most VU downloaders will copy data from a driver card via the VU, but you could opt for separate card readers to avoid tying up your vehicles.
Downloaded information can be transferred to a computer via a USB port or memory card/stick. Think about how data will be downloaded and transferred in your organisation — particularly if drivers and vehicles are away from base for long periods.
For example, you may wish to integrate VU downloading with your maintenance system, or drivers might need to download information from their own cards and post memory cards back to base.
