Contrary to popular belief, Special Types doesn't just mean special weight. You may be well within the current 38-tonne GVVV limit, but it's just as important to be aware of loads that exceed the C&U dimensions—and to pay the appropriate rate of VED, as our 0 feature starting on page 30 shows. With fines of up to five times the difference between the duty paid and the payable duty, and with back duty on top, you could otherwise find yourself with a fairly nasty bill.
This month's Legal Bulletin also looks at another area for which you could find yourself heftily fined for non-compliance: tachograph law. The defence of a "reasonable excuse" may get you off if you find yourself in court without the charts, but what is the court likely to accept as a "reasonable excuse"? Turn to page 32 to find out.
And in light of the recent report on the incidence of wheelloss, we also offer some advice (right) on how to avoid the problem. A few seconds spent checking could save hours of anxiety—so be safe, not sorry!
