In June the Department of the Environment produced a report dealing with wheel loss From commercial vehicles. It was no more than a statistical survey and was not designed to determine the causes of wheel loss, or to give recommendations to prevent it.
The survey re-affirms that the loss of wheels from CVs has been a significant problem since 1982. What is significant is that the Vehicle Inspectorate reported on 303 cases of loose wheels in two months.
It is not clear if the selection process distinguished between an immediate prohibition for loose wheels, a delayed prohibition for loose wheels, or a defect notice for loose wheels—or if the survey only relates to situations which were considered to show significant neglect in that they should have been visually obvious to the driver. As the report indicates, there could be a problem with maintenance. But it re-affirms that maintenance requirements are becoming ever more onerous.
