WE SHOULDN'T really be that surprised when a proposal for charging track costs to foreignregistered trucks has been put in abeyance yet again ('Hauliers react to lorry road user charge ideas', CM 30 July).
After all, the department that would hold the responsibility for z: overseeing this is the Department for Transport (DfI'), which has shown in the past inability to put in the thought and effort required.
Until there is an 180-degree turn of attitude from that department, replacing the visceral contempt for a seeming the road transport industry with both respect and co-operation, then fairness and a future for British hauliers will not exist.
The vignette system seems to be the easiest and quickest method to introduce.
It could be paid daily, weekly, monthly or yearly, with a charge commensurate with the cost of administering it.
I do not see the will to bring this about emanating from Marsham Street [home of the Dfl], but then again, all the unions and trade organisations are not showing the foresight to combine on this issue. You can force civil servants into action if you shake up their complacency.
It might not be a particularly pleasant task, but neither is the sight of more drivers queuing at their local job centres or more operators going to the wall.
