new laws?
• The Minister of Transport warned on Wednesday that if present improvements in accident figures were not maintained further legislation would be introduced.
"We might save 15,000 more accidents a year by seat-belt legislation," he said. "And in the new year we shall be announcing our speed limits policy," he added.
Mr. Marsh had earlier announced a striking reduction in road accident figures for the period of 12 months ended September 1968—the first full year of breath-testing. In this period 1,152 fewer people were killed and 11,177 fewer seriously injured in road accidents.
"The seat-belt law, the tyre regulations, the sustained road safety campaign—all these contributed to the casualty savings," said the Minister.
