• In response to the court ruling, Freight Transport Association chief executive Richard Turner says: 'We are very pleased. This was obviously the right conclusion, and we all know how unreasonable the law was as it stood. It was a 'guilty until proven innocent' approach that smacked of being completely wrong."
However, he admits to being "really disappointed" at the government's reaction, particularly in view of the progress made in an October meeting with Home Office Minister Lord Rooker. Turner adds: "The government is viewing the problem as having been created by the transport industry. We won't get anywhere blaming each other."
Another meeting is scheduled between Lord Rooker, the FTA and the Road Haulage Association, on 19 December to discuss solutions to the immigrant problem. Mike Freeman, head of international affairs at the RHA, says: 'This substantiates all that we have been telling the government over the past three years, and is a vindication of all we have said. The government will hopefully now get the guilty guys instead of shooting everyone."
