• DaimlerChrysler and Hungarian manufacturer RABA have set up a joint venture to develop a range of high-mobility trucks.
Based on Actros engineering, the six and ten-tonne-payload trucks will have a cab developed by a prominent UK specialist supplier, with RABA axles, cab interior components and bodywork. Unveiled at the recent Budapest show, the vehicles will be branded RABA in Hungary and Mercedes-Benz in the rest of the world.
The partnership will be able to participate in tenders for a major Hungarian military re-equipment project for vehicles in 15 categories including the two truck ranges now being prepared by the German-Hungarian venture. Contracts will be awarded early next year; the new defence programme will also be offered to other NATO forces in Europe which are seeking to update their defence logistics capability.
