Having only recently joined the industry and reviewed the various magazines on offer, I am very disappointed to discover that the old thinking involving restrictive practices is still alive.
All 7.5-tonne vehicles are designed to be safe at 70mph. If the driver is not, there are plenty of existing laws to deal with the situation. In my experience government bans achieve nothing other than penalising honest people: the handgun ban is a prime example.
It seems to me that the real issue is to increase the speed of all other vehicles and thus improve their utilisation and reduce costs. The 40mph limit on unrestricted roads is a nonsense, as is 50mph on dual carriageways. Surely everyone in the industry wants to see it succeed and grow in the face of government and EU meddling— restrictions of whatever nature will not allow this to happen.
