faster turnaround of vehicles and more efficient use of drivers. Each truck or trailer has one or more spare bodies, which are loaded while the trucks are out delivering.
"Our rule of thumb is that if a truck or trailer spends more than one hour on the loading dock it is worth considering a demountable body system," says Dave Browning, joint managing director at Peterborough-based Ray Smith Group. "I think one effect of the Working Time Directive will be te make operators even more con' scious about using drivers' availabli hours productively."
Demountable bodies can also save cross-docking from larger thinkers to smaller urban delivery Oibucks. In Ray Smith's Metro-Swap system, up to four small bodies are trucked to an out-of-town transfer site. Each body is then swapped to a smaller 7.6 or 3.5-tonner for final deliveries. Browning says this concept is proving popular with highstreet retailers and tyre companies.
