An objection to a truck park being used as an operating centre has been withdrawn by Suffolk County Council because planning issues are not of interest to the TC. Chris Tindall reports.
SUFFOLK COUNTY Council has withdrawn its objection to a haulage company attempting to use a truck park as an operating centre after being told that any planning issues are -irrelevant".
K&M Haulage Ireland has applied for a licence for 12 trucks; if successful its operating centre will be the Orwell Crossing Lorry Park, the same as its sister firm, K&M Haulage (UK).
The county council had xpressed concerns over planning r)ermission for the application even though planning matters are not considered by Traffic Commissioners.
Orwell Park boss Karl Rout says the council only realised it had made a mistake after Richard Carter, of the highways development control team ,visited the site: "He was very sheepish and said 'I am going to look like a prat if I turn up at the PI [public inquiry] and say it's not up to parking lorries'," Rout reports. "The TC doesn't want to hear about planning issues. He really doesn't care one way or another he wants to know if it is dangerous and if there's available parking."
Carter did not return CM'S calls, but in a letter to the TC, he says: "I have now considered this matter further and can confirm that taking into account [the fact that] the Traffic Commissioner will not consider objections relating to planning permission issues [and the fact that] there are no objections relating to access or site capacity layout for these applications... Suffolk County Council withdraws its objections to these applications."
However, Suffolk Coastal District Council is pursuing its objection, citing increased traffic on the A14. A spokesman says: "The council is fully supportive of the use of the site as a lorry park, but has concerns over its use as a destination in its own right, resulting in additional traffic attracted on to the A14 to the detriment of safety."
