H E "binoculars visioned" environmentalists have no idea of the !roportionate rise in the number of smaller vehicles which would ■ e needed to supply the capital, John French, managing director of I. Spurling Ltd said, if lorry weight restrictions came into being.
Based at Silvertown in LonIon, the company runs 65 .ehicies and provides employnent for 153 persons. There are :4 vehicles at 32.5 tonnes gvw 5 at 20-24-tonne gvw and 16 at light to 16 tonnes gvw.
The heaviest vehicles are enaged in day and night operaions, delivering mainly raw naterials and foodstuffs to nanufacturers and retailers in he Greater London area, Mr 'rench said.
The smaller vehicles are distri bution lorries delivering essential medical supplies to hospitals and chemists, and foodstuffs to High Street shops.
"The true cost of any sort of ban would be borne by the public at large, "by much higher prices for all goods and services, including local authority rates".
"There will be more traffic about with more pollution and as an industry, we are appalled at the biased and ill-considered arguments proffered by environmentalists," he declared.
