One of his key tasks is to provide an objective view on future used values, and it's becoming increasingly obvious to him that if operators want to benefit from strong residuals they'll need to acquire better-specified and more powerful new trucks than they really need. "There's a big gap between residual values at 350hp and at 400hp in the larger's favour—that wasn't the case a few years ago," he says. "And the gap is widening." Even 400hp might not be enough for many used buyers, he warns: "We're seeing a move towards 430hp to 440hp." And is he getting used to being a poacher turned gamekeeper? "Cut me in half," he says, "and you'll already find it says 'Mercedes' right the way through!"
