The works committee of the Camberwell Borough Council reports that in the past one of the greatest difficulties with regard to the collection and removal of house refuse in the borough • has been the fact that a large amount of time has been lost owing to the vehicle containing the refuse having to travel long distances to the shoot, and that, in consequence, the time of the men employed in the work of collection has not been used to the best advantage.
The Pag,efield system, which is in operation in Wandsworth, Lambeth, Finsbury and West Ham and in several provincial boroughs, and also is being tried experimentally in St. Pancras for one district, seeks to obviate this loss of time and expense by arranging that the work should be performed in "sets," each " set " consisting of four horsedrawn vehicles and one motor lorry. The horse-drawn vehicles collect the refuse from the various houses, and the system
is timed so that the motor lorry shall pick up in rotation the vehicles which have been collecting refuse and transport them to the point of disposal, leaving in each case an empty vehicle.
A. special sub-committee reported that, after careful inquiry, it considered the system had much merit and deserved careful consideration. The committee has accordingly decided to invite tenders for. operating the Pagefield system in the borough.
