• Despite objections from 22 local authorities, the North Western Traffic Commissioners on Monday granted an application by the SELNEC PTA to increase bus fares from July 29 for journeys over miles. Fares of 7p and 9p go up by lp and longer journeys up to 2p. The proposed increases have been made necessary by an increase in operational costs and overheads, said Mr D. Brown, representing SELNEC. The Executive had taken steps to cut overheads and costs and had carried out economy measures since taking over the undertaking from local authorities. The Executive would be faced with an estimated deficit of more than ilm unless the fares were increased. The increases would bring in an additional £655,000 this year and £1,560,000 by the end of 1974.
Mr Thomas Hallhead, representing nine of the objectors had unsuccessfully asked the Commissioners earlier to adjourn the hearing to give his clients time to prepare a case.
Mr Charles Hodgson, chairman of the Commissioners, said the application was not unreasonable and added that it came within the counter-inflation guideline.
