THE FIRST FRUITS of the long-awaited joint MAN/Liebherr 'big' vee engine project were spotted by CM at an industry event in Germany last week in an 85-tonne mobile crane.
However, MAN says it will be some time before the new V8 will appear in a production TGA tractor—and UK haulers may only be able to order it in a special types heavy haulage chassis from 2008.
The German manufacturer is giving away few details on the jointly produced engine range (thought to include a V12 as well as a V8), but its partner, construction equipment maker Liebherr, is already offering the V8 at 603hp (450kW) in its seven-axle mobile crane (seen by CM at last week's ZF CV Technology seminar) and 670hp (500kW) in a 96-tonne eight-axle crane carrier.
