FRIGOSCANDIA's Londonbased cold store and distribution depot might be closed as the result of lorry bans, according to Barrie Shrosbree, transport operations manager for the company.
The Stratford-based depot in East London serves London and the South East. It receives a large amount of goods inwards, especially from Tilbury docks. Goods outwards go mainly to retailers and are delivered in as large amounts as possible, because the retailer does not want lorries waiting outside his shop, Mr Shrosbree said.
"Any form of ban would be detrimental to our overall business operations," Mr Shrosbree explained.
"The GLC's proposals for a ban conflict with its approach to passenger transport," he pointed out. "The GLC has encouraged commuters to leave their cars at home and travel by bus on the basis that one bus uses less space than 30 or 40 cars." On the other hand, the GLC proposes to increase traffic volume "by replacing 16, 24 and 32 ton vehicles with smaller units," Mr Shrosbree said.
