A CUT-PRICE fares experiment by a group of services in Greater Manchester brought a 25 per cent increase in some business. Fares were cut by half. But there was a 10 per cent loss of revenue.
Greater Manchester Transport is abandoning an experimental fares cut this weekend after nearly a year, in which the bigger cuts were applied to shortdistance and off-peak journeys, within an average cut of 38 per cent.
GMT services manager (marketing) Martin Buckby said: "This has proved to be a very valuable exercise insofar as it has shown us how we can attract as many passengers as possible and fill otherwise empty seats, while at the same time safeguarding the executive's revenue."
