• Road safety will be compromised by a West Midlands police plan to cut its centralised traffic department, say critics.
In April 75% of the police constables from the 300-strong central traffic division will be transferred to local stations in a six-month trial. Haulage safety campaign Brake says this will reduce the force's available expertise on accident analysis and its ability to seek out illegal truck operators.
A West Midlands police spokesman confirms that traffic police will be pulled off traffic cases to work in other areas.
E The specialist commercial vehicle units are unaffected, as are motorway traffic police.
