Northumberland population: 300,000. County Durham population: 490,000.
HGV workshop rates: Expect to pay in the region of 135442 per hour.
Pump prices: A litre of diesel costs 79.9p.
Drivers' wages: There is no Joint Industrial Council (PC) between the Transport and General Workers Union and Road Haulage Association in north-east England, so there is no concrete pay structure in the region. However, Malcolm Dodds, RHA area manager, northern region, points out that drivers' wages in the area are in line with those in the Midlands and throughout Yorkshire. Pay increases are likely, but they won't make Class i holders wealthy. He says: "Because of the driver shortage, employers are looking to increase price structures. But you can get periods where times are hard, and this means tight margins for hauliers."
Hourly pay for drivers in Northumberland and Durham: It is very hard to be exact, these figures provide a benchmark. says Dodds.
Up to 38 tonnes: 15.74.
Up to 44 tonnes: £5.88.
Specialist work, most notably tanker driving, can attract between £6.50 and £7 an hour.
