It is one of a small fleet, has more than 328,000km on the clock and is maintained under contract by Volvo dealer Maidstone Commercials. Technician Richard Collins not only showed us how to set about the task but was also instructing a young apprentice. Collins has been with Maidstone for more than nine years and has attended most of the manufacturer's courses.

There are three levels of service on the vehicle: intermediate (every six weeks); basic (every three months or 25,000km), and the Annual) 120,000km. Standard times for these are 2.8.3.9 and 7.1 hours respectively, excluding 0.3 hours for road testing Our vehicle was to due for a basic service and the parts required are: oil filter, £7.68; bypass filter, £16.88; fuel filters (2), £3.82 each.
