• The future of Norbert Dentressangle's UK fleet should be clarified this week when the French haulier reveals whether it will carry out its threat to flag out its trucks. Its UK managing director Peter Cvetkovic believes flagging out part or all of its UK fleet could save hundreds of thousands of pounds a year in vehicle excise duty alone.
The company has commissioned a study of the benefits, and will want to use the results to pressurise the Government to reduce the burden of VED and fuel duty on UK hauliers. Losing Dentressangle's UK fleet would be a highprofile embarrassment to the Government: the company operates 500 trucks in the UK and turns over £54m a year.
Last month it announced the closure of its Fareham depot, with the loss of 24 drivers jobs (CM15-21 April), blaming fuel and VED rates.
