• Truck operators could soon face restrictions in Bath as part of wide-ranging plans by the city council to crack down on pollution and congestion.
One of the proposals set out in a recently published draft report suggests giving lorries only "limited access" to the city centre. Instead, priority would be given to pedestrians, cyclists and public transport.
Bath and North East Somerset Council is also considering a 20mph speed limit. Council traffic and safety manager Julian House confirms that one idea being proposed is to ban trucks from the city centre between 10:00-17:00hrs.
House accepts that this would cause "all sorts of difficulties".
The Freight Transport Association has warned of potential problems with drivers' hours, as well as the possibility of residents' complaints as commercial vehicles would be forced to deliver in the early morning or late evening. The FTA is canvassing local opinion on this issue and is to report back to the council.
C An FTA working group is investigating the whole issue of deliveries, particularly in Chester and Aberdeen.
