• Merlin Equipment's new Tsi500 sine-wave inverter converts 12 or 24V DC battery power to 230V AC mains electricity, allowing the use of mains equipment on board vehicles without the need for a generator. Most other inverter outputs are square wave which, although ideal for running microwave ovens and power tools, can create interference on televisions, hi-fi and satellite communication equipment.
The true sine wave output from the Thi500 is compatible with all sensitive appliances and is better regulated than mains hook-up or any generator, says Merlin. In the past sine wave generators have generally been heavy, expensive and inefficient. By contrast, this new device is about the size of a telephone directory. The unit produces 500 watts of power continuously, and will peak at up to 1.5kW—ideal for starting loads with high surge requirements.
