It would appear that September was a long, hard month for many operators: optimism levels sank to a record low.
A total of 65% of respondents said they were either very optimistic or fairly optimistic about the prospects for their business over the next 12 months, while 32% said they were either not very optimistic or not at all optimistic, giving an optimism score of +33 – lower than the previous record low of +35 in May.
This was the third successive month of declining optimism – clearly a worrying trend.
Hire or reward hauliers suffered the most in September, with the optimistic/not optimistic split being an even 50/50; the split for logistics and contract distribution irms was 81/17, while for ownaccount operators it was 78/22.
